Really refreshing - the water cycle paths in Upper Bavaria Dachau: Jewel at the hop and art & culture loop

The so called WasserRadlWege Oberbayern with its hop & beer loop as well as art & culture loop lead directly through the municipal area of Dachau. After all, the art of brewing and painting were once closely connected here.

Even though none of the former seven Dachau brewhouses still exist, the buildings of the Unterbräu, Hörhammerbräu and Zieglerbräu still characterize the appearance of the former marketplace, and the owners of the breweries were often seasoned personalities with a great influence on the fortunes of their town.

Especially in Dachau they also influenced the cultural life in the flourishing time of breweries located in the old town of Dachau through their close connection to the prominent representatives of the former artists' colony at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Taste some of the regional beer specialities in the narrow streets of Dachau old town or visit the paintings gallery of the former artists' colony Dachau. You will also come across painters and their works of art from this period on the Artists' path, where you can stop for a bite to eat in the beer gardens and the many restaurants and cafés along the cycle paths and in the town.

If you bring your own picnic with you, you will find snack tables and benches at the Amper Playground, amidst greenery between the river Amper and the Schlossberg.

Only a few steps - the short ascent from the old town to the former Wittelsbach summer residence Dachau Palace is rewarded with an unexpectedly wide view over Dachau to Munich and, with a foehn-wind blowing, to the Alpine panorama.

The court garden with its baroque lime-tree arbour is an oasis of peace amidst flower beds and fruit trees. In the rear part, the so-called English garden, you can experience busy bees very closely on the bee nature trail.

The river Amper flows directly alongside the foot of the Dachau Old Town Hill and in a short time you reach the old town with its magnificent town houses. High above, Dachau Palace is enthroned.

From here you can enjoy a unique panoramic view over the bavarian state capital to the Alps. Art lovers should not miss a visit to the paintings gallery. The permanent exhibition shows paintings and sculptures of the former artists' colony Dachau

The city still houses many artists and there are regular exhibitions in the various galleries in the city. A visit to the district museum is also worthwhile. Here, the history of the town, the bourgeois handicrafts and guilds as well as the rural everyday culture are shown.

When you leave the city downstream, you can visit the Concentration Camp Memorial Site. It is the highest aim of the city to keep the memory of what happened alive. The museum and archives of the memorial site make a significant contribution to this.
